Pumpkin carving - and the disaster that ensues...

So tonight Emma and I carved pumpkins. Simple thing, right? Not at our house. First of all, it was just Em and I--not so strange, you may think, but I realized that this was the first time I had carved a pumpkin without another ADULT present. Pretty pathetic given I am almost thirty. Anyway, so the two of us are scooping out our pumpkin guts (as Emma so perfectly described), Emma at the cutting board, me at the counter, with my large Pyrex bowl in the middle to contain our mess. Strangly, we were pretty excited about the amount of "guts" we had, as we had major pumpkin seed toasting plans. ANYWAY, so here we are, bowl between us, when I turn my head for a mere second...CRASH...splatter... Em had accidently knocked the bowl to the floor. I looked down, hoping to see big pieces of glass, easy to pick up and salvage my seeds. No such luck. Did you know that Pyrex bowls shatter into five million glass BEADS?? What a goey, crunchy mess I had to clean up! So, then I start on cutting. I Macgyver'd my carving pattern onto my pumpkin with a small army of toothpicks--not such a good idea--lots of poking occurred. :( Unfortunately, it wasn't until I felt a stickiness to my hand that I realized it was covered in blood--I had unknowningly sliced my finger open. With a toothpick. Very pathetic. I know this. But I DID have a blast with Emma--she has the absolute best sense of humor and had me cracking up all night. Mental note to self: remember these times when she is a teenager and doesn't want to hang out with her mom! :)
